House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, who holds significant influence in his home state of South Carolina, is all set to support Joe Biden on Wednesday just ahead of the state’s primary on Saturday. Multiple sources close to the two-time Majority Whip told Politico about his endorsement. Jim served the Majority Whip role previously from 2007 to 2011 and also served the role of House Assistant Minority Leader from 2011 to 2019.
The planned endorsement from Jim is expected to boost Joe Biden’s campaign and can eventually determine the fate of his candidacy. Jim Clyburn, who is currently serving in his 14th term as a congressman, is a close aide of Biden and has been open about his support for the former Vice President during the democratic primary. Some of Democrats panicked about the planned endorsement and called it as the final effort to beat Bernie’s momentum in the current run. Others consider it as a tactic to split the anti-Sanders vote. Clyburn is known to support Biden at some point in time formally. However, the recent surge by Sander in the primaries put pressure on Clyburn to announce the endorsement.
Biden and Jim Clyburn holds good bonding for years and are working closely together. The pitch from Biden for his endorsement is both practical and personal. Speaking to Clyburn, she said - “I’ll endorse Biden this Wednesday morning. I’m also going to inform everyone who I’m going to vote for, but I’m not doing it today.” It is also important to note that Clyburn made a sudden appearance at Biden surrogate event in Columbia, South Carolina, in January.
