Former Vice President Joe Biden intensified attacks on President Donald Trump over the revelation that Trump already knew how deadly the coronavirus could be for fellow Americans back in February when the virus just entered the country. Biden accused Trump of being almost a criminal for not acting swiftly against the American people's life and death situation due to the virus. Speaking at an event with the autoworkers in Michigan, Biden said - "He knew how deadly it would be. It was way more deadly than the common flu. Trump knew, and he purposely played it down. He lied to the fellow American people despite knowing the threat it posed to the country."
Before Biden spoke to the auto workers in Michigan, The Washington Post released excerpts from the on-the-record conversations between veteran journalist Bob Woodward and President Trump, which took place in February and March. Trump dismissed the coronavirus scare while speaking to Woodward. Trump admitted that he intentionally played down the threats posed by the virus instead of creating awareness. Despite his own acknowledgment to Woodward and multiple dismissive statements, the White House press secretary Kayleigh focused on damage control as she said - "President Trump has never lied on COVID to the public. He never downplayed the virus."
Biden continued his attacks, citing the studies which estimated as many as 54,000 lives could have been saved if Trump and his administration went for a strict lockdown just two weeks earlier. "Trump's failure not only cost the lives of our friends and families but also led to the wreckage of the economy, forcing millions of job losses," Biden added. He continued to slam the President for not embracing the safety measures by leading from the front. Trump was reluctant from the beginning to wear a face mask in public. Despite questioning multiple times in the White House briefings, Trump showed no interest in wearing a face mask. "Trump waved the white flag. He didn't do a damn thing. Think about it. Think about how he handled the pandemic. Think about all the actions he didn't do. It's almost criminal not to do anything," Biden concluded.
