President Donald Trump is not only receiving flak from the citizens of the country but also the social media platforms built by his fellow Americans. Video streaming platform Twitch temporarily suspended Trump’s official channel, and another social media site Reddit banned his longtime forum created by his supporters on Monday. The move comes to crack down the hateful content that’s coming from the official channels of the President. In the past few weeks, Twitter and Facebook also blacklisted multiple posts of President Donald Trump as the posts were against the policies of both the companies. However, Trump didn’t learn any lessons from the past black listings.
Steve Huffman, the CEO of Reddit confirmed in a post on Reddit that the “r/The Donald” forum which has over 790,000 subscribers has been suspended for multiple policy breaches and failing to meet the basic expectations set by the company. He further explained that this forum is an addition to another 2000 newly banned forums, also known as subreddits, as a part of the suspension based on the violations to their policies. Explicitly addressing hate is one of the most common policy breaches by these forums. The ban would be effective at 1 pm Eastern Time, and Huffman wrote, “All communities on Reddit must abide by our content policies. Any forum which doesn’t will be suspended. We banned r/The_Donald forum because it didn’t comply with the policies despite giving multiple opportunities.”
Twitch, a video streaming platform of the e-commerce giant Amazon confirmed that it had suspended Trump’s campaign channel for posting videos that are against the policy which “promotes, encourages or facilitates, discrimination, denigration, objectification, harassment or violence” based on specific individual’s identity or belief. Responding to the suspension, one of the company spokespeople explained that the channel had violated the rules by rebroadcasting a video of President Trump’s 2015 event when he kicked off his presidential campaign. In the video, Trump referred to Mexican immigrants as rapists, which is directly creating hate against a particular community and is against the policies. In the video, Trump said - “When Mexico sends its people, they are not sending their best, but they are bringing in drugs. They are rapists, and only some I assume are good people.” Another spokesperson of Twitch said, “In line with our policies, President Trump’s channel has been suspended temporarily, and the related content is removed. Any hateful conduct will not be allowed on Twitch.”Dr. Dhillon Randeep
