In the past two weeks, former Vice President Joe Biden received a lot of high-profile endorsements starting from his Democratic opponents Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Amy Klobuchar to the former President Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. With strong backing from the Democratic party and poor approval ratings of President Trump, Biden is making the most out of it. On Thursday, he formally launched the selection committee to pick his best running-mate for the elections in November. With his pledge to select a woman candidate, this will be the third time a woman would be seeking the Vice Presidency from a major party in the history of the US.
A four-member search committee was created by Joe Biden, which includes his longtime friend Chris Dodd, former Senator from Connecticut. The other three are Lisa Blunt Rochester, the congresswoman from Delaware, Eric Garcetti, and Cynthia Hogan. Biden is hopeful that the committee will come up with the best prospective candidates by July. His campaign manager Jeen O’Malley Dillion informed in a statement, “The four committee members will reflect the strength and diversity of the Democratic party. They will provide incredible insight and expertise to what will be a rigorous selection process and come up with the best candidate.” Biden wanted a governing partner whom he can trust and work the same way he did when he was with President Barack Obama. “I need a running-mate who’s going to be, as Barack once said, ‘simpatico with me,’ who is a real partner in progress and is ready to be President if and when needed within a short notice. There are a lot of women out there with great political experience who can do the job,” Biden said during a virtual fundraiser event.
The VP search committee will be aided by former White House counsel Bob Bauer, campaign general counsel Dana Remus and former Homeland Security adviser Lisa Monaco. The initial list includes a dozen persons from his primary election opponents, members of Congress and governors. At the age of 77, Joe Biden would be the oldest president ever in the history of the United States, and he wants his VP candidate to be ready to run the country right from the very first day. Biden put himself under pressure when he announced he would select a woman as his running mate; most of his supporters suggested to pick a woman of color. Although he didn’t pledge it, Biden assured all his supporters that he would appoint a black woman definitely if he becomes the President. He added, “Presidents come and go, but Supreme Courts last for generations.”
