The entire world came to a standstill with the coronavirus outbreak, which started in China. The United States is the worst affected country globally, with a total of 4.4 million positive cases and 150 thousand Americans losing their life. Ever since the virus broke out in early December in China and early January in the US, scientists and health experts are working day and night in finding ways to contain the spread of the virus. There has been a lot of progress since the past six months with their research and scientific studies. All of us are now eagerly waiting for a safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine as multiple companies in various countries have already started Phase 1 trials of the vaccine.
As the development of vaccines is entering the final stages, former Vice President Joe Biden released a statement on his official Medium handle expressing his views and criticizing President Trump for not supporting the scientists. "The development of any new vaccine requires months of dedication to science, team coordination, high transparency, truth, and fairness. But currently, we have a President who doesn't stand for any of these things," Biden stated in his opening remarks. He further directed Trump to commit to the three principles of integrity in the development of the vaccine. "The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) should be free from any political pressure in making the final decision for a safe and effective vaccine, which will save thousands of Americans. To do this, President Trump should assure all Americans that the White House and his administration will completely respect the independent functioning of the FDA. Furthermore, I call the President to commit to the three principles that I would follow if I were the President."
The three principles laid out by Democratic presidential nominee are:
1. Scientists and public health experts should decide on the safety and efficacy of the vaccine:
President Trump should not go overboard the development of the vaccine and pressurize scientists as he did for hydroxychloroquine.
2. The clinical data for the vaccine that gets FDA approval should be released for the public to go for an independent expert review.
3. The development of the vaccine should be fully transparent based on the recommendations of career staff.Dr. Dhillon Randeep
