United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) union, which consists of over 1.3 million members, announced their endorsement to former Vice President Joe Biden. The support from the union came after Biden won the primaries in the states of Arizona, Illinois, and Florida this week. The support from such a significant union and its members will boost Biden as he seeks to win the nomination against Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.
UFCW President March Perrone said that Biden is the only best-equipped candidate to help and guide the vulnerable service workers from the coronavirus crisis. In a written statement to Politico website, Perrone wrote - “At a time when UFCW members in food retail, healthcare, packing, and processing are on the front lines of the coronavirus outbreak, Biden has again stood by our side supporting and calling for paid leave and designating these brave workers as first responders.” Biden on Thursday asked the states to filter the grocery store workers as emergency personnel, which will make them eligible for certain benefits like free child care.
UFCW is another union to join the list of endorsements for Biden in the past few months. Others include the National Education Association, International Association of Fire Fighters, and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. These unions were skeptical about extending their support as there were a large number of nominees from the Democratic party. However, with only two significant candidates presently, most of the unions have decided to rally after Biden as he is consistently commanding the Democratic race for the presidency. “UFCW workers are critical in keeping our families with food and supplies. Their employers and the entire USA should rally around these workers to ensure they receive all the benefits and protections they need,” said Biden in a statement. Biden was also one of the candidates to attend UFCW picket lines in Boston, supporting Stop & Shop workers last year.
