In a significant news outbreak, President Trump and the First Lady Melania Trump announced that they had tested positive for COVID-19. This comes just a day after the first presidential debate against his opponent and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden. With just a month for Election Day, this is a massive setback for Trump’s campaign, as it would lead to the reduction of in-person rallies as part of his campaign trail. It also created doubts on whether Trump will be available for the next presidential debate, which is to be held on October 15th in Miami, Florida. Trump tweeted, “Tonight, FLOTUS, and I tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!”
The news was also confirmed by the White House and Trump’s physician Sean Conley. “Rest assured, I expect the President to continue all his duties without any distraction while recovering,” Conley said. Before Trump’s announcement, Bloomberg revealed that his adviser Hope Hicks tested positive. He traveled with the president this week during the first presidential debate. Vice-President Mike Pence and Second Lady Karen Pence also got tested for the coronavirus, and both found to be negative as per the VP’s office. On multiple occasions, Trump denied wearing a mask when in public contrast to other world leaders, including his opponent Joe Biden. Even during the presidential debate, Trump mocked Biden: “I don’t wear a mask like him (Biden). Every time you see him, he’s got a mask. He could be speaking 200 feet away, and still, he shows up with the biggest mask I’ve ever seen.” A day later, after mocking the Democratic presidential nominee, Trump has tested positive for coronavirus along with his wife.
The news wasn’t well-received by the global markets, including the United States. The S&P 500 was initially down by 0.6% in the morning trade and ended with a loss of 0.96%. Messages poured in for the president for a speedy recovery from across the world. Former vice president Joe Biden tweeted - “ Jill and I send our thoughts to President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump for a swift recovery. We will continue to pray for the health and safety of the president and his family.” India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, also sent out the best wishes for his friend: “Wishing my friend @POTUS @realDonaldTrump and @FLOTUS a quick recovery and good health.”
