President Donald Trump is under immense pressure surrounding him. With Biden’s poll figures rising consistently, Trump is worried about his reelection efforts as the general elections are just under 100 days. On Thursday, Trump refused to tone down his earlier suggestion of postponing the elections, based on an unverified prediction of voter fraud amid the pandemic. He wrote, “with Universal mail-in voting, 2020 elections will be the most INACCURATE & FRAUDULENT Election in history. It will be a great embarrassment to the USA. Delay the election until the voters can properly, securely and safely vote,” on Twitter. President Trump’s unusual proposal to delay the election is first of its kind as he is constitutionally not empowered to enforce the suggestion. It can only happen with the consent of Congress as per the Constitution.
His suggestion didn’t go well, as his own party members rejected the idea. The Republican senator from Florida, Marco Rubio, said - “The President can suggest whatever he likes. The law is what it is, and we will have the election legitimately. It‘s going to be credible as we always do every four years.” Hours after the criticism for his suggestion, Trump tried to do some damage control. “Glad I was able to get the very dishonest LameStream Media to finally start talking about the RISKS to our oldest Democracy from dangerous Universal Mail-In-Voting,” Trump said, reiterating his support to absentee voting completely. Trump asserted that one needs to know the result of the elections on election night itself; it should not take days, months, or even years. President Trump claims it after some election experts warned that a high surge in mail-in ballots could lead to the delay of results on November 3rd.
“I don’t want to see an election where the projected winner or the announcement for the winner of the election takes place after a week or a month or frankly years. I don’t want to see a crooked election either,” Trump told reporters without providing any evidence on why the mail-in votes of the 2020 election would be the most rigged in history. Earlier to this, the former vice president rightly predicted Trump’s move to delay the polls. “Mark my words, I think Trump will try his best to delay the election somehow, he may come up with some rationale on why it can’t be held,” Biden said in April. At that time, Trump rejected Biden’s warning and claimed he never even thought of changing the election date.Dr. Dhillon Randeep
