Dwayne The Rock Johnson, popular wrestling superstar and highest earning celebrity of Hollywood announced his support on Sunday for Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and his running mate Senator Kamala Harris. This is his first ever public presidential endorsement in all his professional career. The Jumanji actor announced his decision to endorse Biden with a seven and a half minute-long video posted on his official social media platforms. In the video, he said - “As a centrist and a political independent for many years, I’ve voted for both Republicans and Democrats in the past. However, in this crucial election, I believe that former vice president Joe Biden and Senator Kamala Harris are the best duo to lead our country. As my first ever public presidential endorsement, I am proud to endorse them for the race to the White House.”
Earlier in 2016, Dwayne Johnson admitted that he would run for the president to serve the people and create a great environment for them. However, he later clarified in an interview with Variety that due to film obligations, he now plans to run for the office four years later. “Realistically, the consideration would be 2024,” he clarified. The video released by Dwayne Johnson also included a virtual conversation with Bide and Harris. The meeting marks the first conversation for Senator Kamala Harris, who claimed that she is a huge fan of his movies. In their interaction with Dwayne Johnson, Biden said that he will always tell the truth and be open about his failures taking responsibility for his decisions. Kamala Harris also explained the need for trust and truth in challenging times like a pandemic. “As a country, Americans need a strong leadership who can bring back the old glory which we lost due to the pandemic,” Harris said.
The Rock posted the video of his interaction with the text: “ Progress takes courage, humanity, empathy, strength, KINDNESS & RESPECT. We must ALL VOTE.” The tweet is retweeted over 100 thousand times on Twitter with a total of over 12 million views. Rock also made a public request for a change in leadership in June after the racial protests due to George Floyd’s death.
