President Donald Trump made headlines with his comments about Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who won the Nobel Peace Prize for the year 2019. Trump claimed that he was qualified to get the Nobel Peace Prize instead of Abiy Ahmed for saving a country from a big war. Trump was referring to his work on the dispute involving Ethiopia. Responding to Trump’s claims, Abiy Ahmed said - “I’m not aware of the criteria used to select me. If required, US President Donald Trump should take his complaint about being overlooked for the Nobel Peace Prize to the organizers.”
Even though Trump claimed he is eligible for the award for saving the country, the facts say a different set of things. Eritrea and Ethiopia were in a struggle from 1998 to 2000, which led to killing tens of thousands of people. A ceasefire was signed in 2000, but the neighbors’ technically remained at war until recently. In July 2018, Eritrea’s President Isaias Afwerki and Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed successfully signed a peace deal. This deal put an end to the two decades fight between the two nations. All these years, the long border was closed dividing families, and it made trading impossible between the two countries. To reward the outstanding work of Abiy Ahmed, The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the Nobel Peace Prize for his decisive initiative to resolve the border conflict with their neighboring country Eritrea. Speaking to the reporters, Abiy Ahmed further added - “I was not working for the prize but only for the peace in the region. I have no clue about the criteria on how the Nobel committee selects an individual for the prize. President Trump's complaint should go to Oslo, not to Ethiopia.”
The response from Abiy Ahmed is termed as the International embarrassment for President Trump. President of the United States holds high power and dignity among world leaders. Trump should think twice before making such careless statements which will eventually embarrass the people of the United States.
