Former Vice President Joe Biden is set to top the Democratic presidential candidates in South Carolina as per the latest poll by NBC/Marist released on Monday. With 27% support among the likely voters, Biden topped the list among all the Democratic nominees despite the recent surge by Senator Bernie Sanders. With 23% lead, Sanders adjusted with the second spot. Businessman Tom Steyer was the only other candidate to reach double digits in the poll - with 15%. Following the top three candidates are former South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg with 9%, Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren at 8%, Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar with 5% and Tulsi Gabbard with 3% support among the likely voters.
The poll by NBC was conducted from February 18 through February 21 with 2661 adults in South Carolina. The margin of error is plus or minus 2.4 percentage points. A total of 539 likely Democratic primary voters in South Carolina are included in the poll with plus or minus 6.0 percentage points as the margin of error. The poll research was completed before Nevada caucuses held on Saturday. South Carolina was led by Biden for years now, with the latest poll release, it’s clear that Biden still the clear winner.
Additionally, this poll by NBC is the third survey out of South Carolina in recent days. The poll also reveals that black voters in South Carolina are still supporting Biden. 35% of the black voters support Biden for his nomination, while only 20% endorse Sanders and 19% backs Steyer. A similar poll by Fox News in January declared that Biden would win South Carolina significantly with over 36% support among likely voters. Even though the support decreased a little bit, it is critical to note that Biden has bounced back after the unexpected performances in the past few weeks.
