Civil rights leader John Lewis is the new entrant to the list of American politicians to endorse former Vice President Joe Biden. Lewis is currently serving as the US Representative for Georgia’s 5th Congressional district and officially became the 38th member of the Congressional Black Caucus to support Biden’s campaign for the Democratic nomination formally. Lewis also suggested Biden select a woman of color as his running mate once he wins the nomination.
Speaking on a conference call with the reporters, John Lewis said - “I think Vice President Biden should look around. It would be good to have a woman of color.” Although Lewis, who belongs to Atlanta-area, didn’t make a demand publicly, his comments broadly reflected the sentiment among African-American leaders. During the presidential primary, Biden received overwhelming support from black voters, and it is time for him to strengthen the black voters’ turnout to win in November. The decision of Lewis comes at an uncertain time amid coronavirus pandemic. Supporting Lewis’s idea of selecting a Black woman as Vice President, Adrianne Shropshire, executive director of BlackPAC, said in an email - “Black women have demonstrated their commitment to the Democratic party and to remove Trump from the office.”
