Indeed, President Trump isn’t learning even after getting impeached in the House of Representatives. The reason is his new decision to roll back a large number of environmental regulations that protect air, water, land and public health from climate change effects and fossil fuel pollution. The existing rules help to curb greenhouse gas emissions and limit pollution and toxic wastes into the country’s water. According to Harvard Law School’s rollback tracker, Trump’s administration targeted as many as 85 environmental rules. The consequences of restricting these regulations are troublesome at various levels.
As per the research by NYU Law School, it will lead to premature deaths and higher levels of climatic change with an increase in greenhouse gas emissions. Here are five major environmental rollbacks by Trump administration:
1. Neglecting Obama-Biden era rules restricting auto pollution
2. Weak climate plan that helps coal plants to stay open
3. Stringent regulations which make it harder to protect endangered species
4. Revoking Obama-Biden Clean Water rule
This decision will allow polluters to discharge toxic substances into the country’s waters without any permission. Obama-Biden era rule had a goal of protecting 60% of the country’s water from contamination.
5. Rollback of regulations on Methane leaks
In August Trump administration made plans to weaken regulations on climate-changing methane emissions. Once they are adopted, the government will no longer have to implement new technologies to monitor and fix methane leaks from pipelines and facilities.
Democratic nominee, Joe Biden expressed his displeasure with a tweet. Here’s his tweet:
Donald Trump is a threat to the future of our planet. Over the last year, he has rolled back regulations on:— Joe Biden (@JoeBiden) December 27, 2019
- Methane leaks
- Auto pollution
- Clean water protections
- Endangered species protections
We have to get him out of the White House. https://t.co/Dv1wjpEIRp
