Senator Bernie Sanders responded positively after former Vice President Biden selected Senator Kamala Harris as his running mate in his fight against President Donald Trump for the White House this November. Despite the differences over policy proposals in their own party, Sanders defended Harris as the vice-presidential pick, explaining the importance of defeating President Trump to a majority of progressives. Bernie lauded Kamala Harris, calling her as “incredibly smart and tough.” Speaking to George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s “This Week” program, the Vermont Senator said - “I think Kamala is an asset for Biden’s campaign, and I think she’s going to do great on the campaign trail,” about the California Senator.
However, all is not well in his own base for Bernie Sanders. Some progressives, mostly those who supported him in the 2016 and 2020 Democratic primaries, weren’t pleased with selecting Harris. Some of them cited her past work as the Attorney General of California, labeling that her work doesn’t meet the moment when Black Lives Matter protests were in full swing. Bernie Sanders’ former national press secretary, Brianna Joy Gray, called out the decision from her Twitter handle. She posted - “We are in the midst of the largest protest movement in American history, the subject of which is excessive policing, and the Democratic Party chose a “top cop” and the author of the Joe Biden crime bill to save us from Trump. The contempt for the base is, wow.”
When questioned about the differences from his supporters, Sanders explained that “the overwhelming majority of progressives understand that it is absolutely essential to defeat President Donald Trump. But a lot of my supporters are not enthusiastic about former vice president Joe Biden. Do you know the reason? I ran against Biden.” Sanders further added, “but I think there is a huge understanding that Trump must be defeated at any cost, and Biden must be elected. And that day, when Biden is elected, we will do all the good works for the people of America and not for the one percent wealthy campaign contributors.” Bernie is scheduled to speak on Monday night in support of Biden at the Democratic National Convention.Dr. Dhillon Randeep
