As per the landmark judgment by the United States Supreme Court in 2010, the government has no right to restrict independent expenditures for political communications by anyone, including corporations, labor unions, or associations. This case was tabled after Citizens United sought to advertise a film critical of then-Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. The decision by the Supreme court remains highly controversial. It generated a lot of public discussions over the years. With the US elections just under ten months, the issue is again making headlines.
The Supreme Court judgment has attracted a lot of opposing views because it will eventually unleash an unlimited amount of dark money into US politics. To fix this mess, a political action committee named End Citizens United (ECU) was formed. The main aim of this organization is to reverse the historic Supreme court decision of 2010 in Citizens United vs. Federal Election commission. Founded in 2015, ECU operated its first election cycle during 2016, with $25 million in funding. ECU organization is endorsed by Democratic candidates Elizabeth Warren, Hillary Clinton, Zephyr Teachout, Russ Feingold, etc. Former Vice President Joe Biden is also committed to this challenge of reversing the Supreme Court decision. As a part of his election campaign, Joe Biden asked his supporters to enroll themselves to drive out the End Citizens United.
If you support Biden and think it’s time to get big money out of politics, sign your name to prove, you support a Constitutional Amendment to end Citizens United. Here’s the link to add your name to support Biden’s campaign.
