President Trump and his administration are yet again in the news for all the wrong reasons. On Friday, his administration has finally decided to roll back the policies of the Obama-Biden era, which helped protect LGBTQ patients from any discrimination. This policy also helps the health experts who worry about vulnerable populations getting affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The President's present decision is one of the longest-sought moves by his supporters, mainly from the conservative Christian community. It is also targeted to mobilize his religious supporters base amid vast criticism over the way his administration handled the pandemic and the recent protests over the death of black man, George Floyd, in police custody.
As per the policy laid out by the Obama-Biden administration, all the health care experts must stop discriminating the transgender patients and women who seek abortions. The first time protections for LGBTQ patients were given under a nondiscrimination clause in the Affordable Care Act as they faced a lot of struggles to get essential and necessary care. Speaking to Politico, Sharita Gruberg of the Center for American Progress said, "these actions demonstrate how little this administration gives value to the lives of transgender people, their health and safety. It's even more depressing to rollback the policy on the anniversary of the deadliest attack on the LGBTQ community in the history of the United States." The policy was drafted and passed by the Obama-Biden administration four years back after the mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, which took 49 Americans' lives and left dozens injured.
However, head of the HHS civil rights office, Roger Severino claimed that the timing of the rule was not pre-planned, and it is purely coincidental. He also denied that the new set of regulations would trouble the patients during the pandemic. "We've gone into overdrive in terms of the enforcement of our civil rights, and that will not be affected," said Roger. Former Vice President and Democratic presumptive nominee Joe Biden criticized Trump for his policy reversal. From his official Twitter handle, Biden posted - "On the fourth anniversary of Pulse. In the middle of Pride month. During a global pandemic. Donald Trump's cruelty truly knows no bounds. We have to defeat him this November.”Dr. Dhillon Randeep
