The White House announced that President Donald Trump wants a new inspector general to serve in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) replacing the older IG. Christi Grimm was the inspector general of HHS, who criticized the Trump administration for lack of facilities in the wake of coronavirus pandemic. In a report, Grimm mentioned that hospitals in the US lacked essential things like protective gear for the frontline workers and testings required to fight the spread of the virus effectively. A month after the criticism from Grimm, the President decided to remove her as the agency’s watchdog with immediate effect.
In a press release, the White House announced the nomination of Jason Weida to take up the role of inspector general at HHS filling the shoes of Grimm. Presently, Weida is serving as the assistant US attorney in Boston. He also has previous work experience in the Department of Justice’s Office of Legal Policy. Before joining the government service, Weida used to work in private practices for judges on the Court of Appeals, District Court for Rhode Island and the Rhode Island Supreme Court. President Trump slammed Grimm in his Twitter post for authorizing a report which made allegations of his connections with Russia. Trump tweeted - “Why didn’t the IG, who spent eight years with the Obama Administration (Did she Report on the failed H1N1 Swine Flu debacle where 17,000 people died?), want to talk to the Admirals, Generals, VP & others in charge, before doing her report. Another Fake Dossier!”
Approximately 12,469 people lost their lives due to swine flu as per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While that date shown at the time of criticism by Grimm due to coronavirus was also more than 11,000 deaths. With this report, Trump’s administration was targeted for being unable to handle the crisis effectively.
