The killing of Qassem Soleimani, one of the most influential persons in Iran, has escalated the tensions around the world. The situation was terrible even before the attack, and Donald Trump has now made it worse. In the latest development, US President Donald Trump has given a stern warning that the USA is ready to bomb prominent sites of Iranian culture if Tehran plans to retaliate against the killing of their top general. Some experts feel that the warning given by Trump will amount to a war-like situation at unprecedented levels.
This has to be the first instance where a world leader publicly issued threats to conduct attacks on cultural targets from a social media platform which is unheard in modern diplomacy. In a series of tweets, Trump warned: "Let this serves as a WARNING that if Iran strikes any Americans or American assets, we have targeted 52 Iranian sites (representing the 52 American hostages taken by Iran many years ago), some at a very high level & important to Iran & the Iranian culture, and those targets, and Iran itself, WILL BE HIT VERY FAST AND VERY HARD. The USA wants no more threats!" Later he explained his threat - "Iran is talking very boldly about targeting certain USA assets as revenge for our ridding the world of their terrorist leader who had just killed an American, & badly wounded many others, not to mention all of the people he had killed over his lifetime, including recently hundreds of Iranian protesters. He was already attacking our Embassy and preparing for additional hits in other locations. Iran has been nothing but problems for many years."
However, Twitter users didn't take the warning seriously from Donald Trump. Quoting Trump's tweet, Colin Kahl, former Obama-Biden administration official, expressed his views on why he finds it hard to believe the threat from Trump. Here's Colin Kahl tweet - "For what it's worth, I find it hard to believe the Pentagon would provide Trump targeting options that include Iranian cultural sites. Trump may not care about the laws of war, but DoD planners and lawyers do and targeting cultural sites is a war crime."
Biden called President Trump as irrational with his new warning. Here's the tweet from former Vice President:
The more the walls close in on this guy, the more irrational he becomes. https://t.co/Nba7Color1— Joe Biden (@JoeBiden) January 5, 2020
