The United Nations women’s national soccer team or termed as USWNT is one of the most successful and famous international teams across the world. They have won four Gold medals in six appearances at the Olympic games. For the record, they have at least one medal in all the Olympic events which took place from 1991 to 2015. In the 2016 Olympics, they were knocked out in the quarter-finals. They also have four championship trophies in the FIFA World cup games, the most recent being 2019. The present US women’s soccer team which won the world cup has a lesbian coach along with several other lesbian players, including the Most Valuable Player Megan Rapinoe. Along with winning the world cup, they have also set the record straight for social issues like gender equality and equal pay.
This year’s women’s world cup gained attention for the social and political issues raised by the players just before the start of the tournament. On March 8th, coinciding with the International Women’s Day, as many as 28 women national players sued the US Soccer Federation for the unequal pay and gender discrimination. It is also reported that men’s team which is currently ranked 30th as per the FIFA rankings, earn more even while losing the game when compared to women’s team winning a match. The US Soccer Federation is also very biased when it comes to the prize money. Men’s team was awarded $5.4 million as a bonus even after losing in the Round of 16 in the 2014 World Cup while women’s team was awarded only $1.7 million for winning the World Cup in 2015.
The debate had reached a new level in June when Megan Rapinoe, the team’s captain, snorted in response to a question about visiting the White House to celebrate the victory. Megan told the reporter - “I’m not going to the fuc*ing White House,” which eventually annoyed President Donald Trump. He tweeted back saying - “I am a big fan of the American Team and Women’s Soccer, but Megan should WIN first before she TALKS! Finish the job!.” Now that women’s team has won the World Cup, Democratic party members have invited the women’s team to the Capitol. Donald Trump was trolled hilariously for his tweet after the women’s team has won the World Cup.
Women’s soccer player, @mPinoe, just stated that she is “not going to the F...ing White House if we win.” Other than the NBA, which now refuses to call owners, owners (please explain that I just got Criminal Justice Reform passed, Black unemployment is at the lowest level...— Donald J. Congratulatory wishes kept on pouring for the Women’s soccer team from the day they have won the World Cup. The wishes were from all across America, including businesspeople, athletes, politicians, etc. Joe Biden, the 47th Vice President of the United States, congratulated the women’s soccer team with a tweet and the hashtag. #OneNationOneTeam.
